Hi, I’m Janiya Pearson : )

Janiya Pearson is a Queens, NY native. She was introduced to dance through her family and began dancing in 2005 at The Devore Dance Center.Janiya attended The Ailey School in 2016 training for four years  under the direction of Guillermo Asca. During that time, Janiya was introduced to Move(NYC) Young Professionals Programs under the direction of Nigel Campbell and Chanel DaSilva.There, she worked with choreographers like Roderick George, Laja Martin, Tamisha Guy and among others.. Janiya also trained with Ballet Hispanico on a full scholarship alongside with Restoration Arts directed by Ronald K.Brown in 2018. In 2020 Janiya was awarded a YoungArts Honorable Mention winner.

 Janiya graduated from University of the Arts earning her BFA in Dance in 2024 under the direction of  Donna Faye Burchfield. Training under Tommie -Waheed Evans,  Kim Bears-Bailey,  Courtney Henry, Shayla-Vie Jenkins, Juel D. Lane and others. Janiya was a company member with the JustSole Street Dance Theatre and Eleone Dance Theater. She now is a Company Member with Red Clay Dance Company on her second season.

Janiya’s research is rooted in working with the fusion of African and Contemporary dance forms.. She is continuing to make space for African Dance in spaces that don’t have it accessible for students. I want to be a vessel for students to explore their version of activism and finding practices that help them find themselves in this world.

As an artist, that embodies a profound love for dance intertwined with a relentless pursuit of understanding African dance forms. Each movement creates a testament to  deep-rooted connection to the rich cultural tapestry of Africa. With every step, I seek to honor the legacy of those who came before me, delving into the intricacies of traditional African rhythms and movements.

Through my research, I’ve explored the historical and contemporary significance of African dance, uncovering stories of resilience, joy, and liberation. My artistic journey is a celebration of diversity and unity, as I strive to bridge cultural divides through the universal language of movement.

In dance, one can witness the fusion of tradition and innovation, as I fearlessly pushes boundaries and challenge preconceptions. With unwavering passion and dedication,I invite audiences to join me on a transformative journey, where the soulful rhythms of Africa resonate deeply, stirring the spirit and igniting the imagination.
